frequently asked questions

Is Catatiller a local company?

Yes. I am based in Fort Worth, Texas.

What are your business hours?

Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.

All phone calls and emails will be returned within 24 hours.

Who is Catatiller for?

Residential homeowners, plant lovers, gardening enthusiasts, environmentalists, nature lovers, water conservationists, wildlife lovers, bird watchers, beauty admirers.

Basically, anyone who values and respects nature, the well-being of living things and our quality of life, and you are highly motivated to improve and beautify your outdoor environment for your enjoyment.  You want to improve the outdoors---and allow your yard to be an extension of your home.

Anyone who is seeking an experienced horticulturist that knows how to combine plants into a meaningful design to not only enhance the value and beauty of your home, but also support the native climate, native wildlife and pollinators, soil type and lighting requirements of the property while minimizing water usage.

How do I get started with Catatiller?

Give me a call. Let’s have an initial discussion on the phone to discuss your project goals, wishes, timing and budget.  I will also provide a brief overview of my services and offerings.  And we can decide together if it is a good fit to move to the next stage…an initial on-site consultation.

What makes Catatiller different as a landscape designer?

I really take time to understand what is important to YOU!  I ask a lot of questions to understand your likes and dislikes.  I want to know your goals for your landscape and how you will use your space.  Once I know your lifestyle and wish list, I can create a unique, functional and beautiful outdoor living environment customized just for your needs.

I love to focus on native plants that are well-suited for our climate, soil, lighting and wildlife. This means lowest maintenance and lowest resources (water, fertilizer, upkeep time) for you!

My custom design process and presentation style is very visual.  I provide conceptual photo mock-ups (along with CAD drawings and color renderings) that allow you to see your design installed.  My design and presentation process allow the ideas and vision for your landscape to crystallize in your mind.  You will have no doubts what your final product will be!

What do they say, “A picture is worth a thousand words.”?  I give you pictures so you can see your dream yard.

Why are Native & Adapted Plants so important?

In a nutshell, they live and thrive in our geographic region.  Native plants have the highest success rate because they are accustomed to our soil, climate and environment.

What does that mean to you?  They are heat tolerant, drought tolerant, more pest and disease-resistant and require less water and maintenance.  Not only that, they provide shelter and food for our wildlife and pollinators.  Native plants support our natural ecosystem.

WIN WIN for all.

What is NOT included with your landscape design?

Catatiller does not provide irrigation plans, grading plans or construction plans.  Although I provide you with ideas for hardscapes, pergolas, water features, structures, decks, etc., a contractor or structural engineer can provide you with construction details during the building process.

How does Catatiller work?

I always like to meet my clients in person for an initial consultation and walk through a client questionnaire to get started.  I want to understand your vision and wishes, and how you plan to utilize and live in your outdoor landscape.  We even exchange ideas on a digital idea board so I can see landscapes, gardens and plants that appeal to you.

After our consultation visit, I provide a design fee estimate along with my process and deliverables.

Once the design fee estimate is approved, we meet again to clarify the scope of the project and review your goals from the client questionnaire.  I also analyze your site conditions (sun, shade, drainage, etc.), take soil samples along with photos and measurements to create your scaled base site map.

The next phase is conceptual design with creation of a computer-drafted landscape plan along with realistic photo mock-ups. Once I have created your landscape design, we meet for a detailed presentation along with “image boards” to convey concepts visually (color palette, styles, plants, material recommendations).

Once a final landscape design is approved, I move forward and provide you with a master plan estimate to include design, plants & materials sourcing and on-site installation.

Be sure to visit the “My Design Process” page to read the in-depth planning, design and installation process.

How long does the entire planning, design and installation typically take?

I like to allow for 4 to 6 weeks of time for the initial consultation and design process. Once we schedule the landscape installation, timing will be dependent on contractor availability, materials, weather and time of year. These variables are important to consider when you are planning ahead for a landscape project.

Do I have to use Catatiller to install my design?

No. You are free to hire a contracted company of your choice, or install your landscape yourself.  But, I think you will want me to oversee the installation to ensure the finished product matches the original design vision.

How do you handle a set budget?

At the initial consultation, we will talk about your budget for your project.  I keep the budget in mind as I design but there are always variables – like materials, plant sizes and plant availability – that can drastically increase or decrease your costs.  We stay in communication every step throughout the process so you can make decisions that impact any changes in the budget.

Why do you focus on Native & Sustainable Gardens?

I really want to create gardens that are good for our wildlife, pollinators and our local environment.  I want to preserve precious resources....like water.  I focus on composting.  I never recommend synthetic insecticides, pesticides or herbicides.  I use organic fertilizers and methods to support the gardens. And I also love to incorporate essential oils and companion planting into design, when possible, for pest control.

Benefits of Native & Adapted Plants:

- save water and money

- good for environment

- supports our wildlife and pollinators

- aesthetically pleasing

- lasts forever

- low maintenance

- fewer pests or disease

- heat & drought tolerant

We can all do our part to make our world better!

What can I expect to pay for design and installation?

Landscaping is a very broad term that encompasses a vast range of projects, so it has a wide range of associated costs per square foot. The average price per square foot generally ranges from $5 to $20 a square foot, depending on what you do with an area. It is common to mix materials for each landscape project (soil amendments, plants, hardscapes, water features, structures), which means the cost per square foot can vary greatly.
