Garden philosophy

Life Cycle: a series of changes…

“Have you ever seen a flower grow?

Of course not.  It is nearly impossible to wait for anything that takes that long.

If you did, it would change you.  It would slow you down and remind you that REAL things take time.

That is magic.  Isn’t it?

The next time that you see a flower sticking up out of the ground or in a vase….

Remember that what makes it so beautiful….is how long it took to grow.

Real things take time.

You think things have to be real OR magic, but the BEST things are both.”

- Excerpt from the movie “Star Girl” -

If I could have written this so simply and eloquently, I would have done so.

This movie captured the beauty of planting a seed and watching it grow.

Anything worth doing is worth taking the time do it right.

There is magic in watching the entire process from start to finish….no matter how long it takes.  And in the end, there is so much deep appreciation and peace for the whole process.

Your landscape will go through so many seasons and so many changes as it develops and grows. Every season is beautiful and fun to watch. Imagine your yard as a blank canvas waiting for every brush stroke of vivid color and texture. Absorb and appreciate these series of changes. Be patient. Provide for the basic needs of your landscape (sun, water, soil nutrients) and watch it flourish.

My goal is “The Right Plant. The Right Place.” What does this mean? The key is to choose plants that are well-suited and will thrive in the location they are planted, with limited additional input. Sounds simple enough, but you have to look at all of the factors for your situation - soil, light, pH, hardiness zone, water, climate, drainage, mature size, etc.

my garden philosophy:

Delight in the transformation. Delight in the journey.

Let’s keep this simple. You benefit from growing a garden. Just the act of walking outside to check on your plants will boost your mood and put a smile on your face. There is actually evidence that gardeners live longer and are less stressed. Yeah! Get outside!

Gardening is an adventure! Start by planting one thing and watch it grow.

Gardening will lead you on a journey of fun, health, discovery, beauty…and lots of trial and error. It teaches us patience. Anything that is both REAL and MAGIC is worth your time.

“An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail.”  —Edwin H. Land

Enjoy the journey.
